ELO it's a skill ranking system. This is a simplification of it mind you coz I'm not going to type a book out, but essentially Elo's goal is to find your actual skill level, it does this by giving everyone to start with a base number, and then as you win/lose your Elo number shifts. You lose more Elo if you lose against opponents worse than you the worse they are the more you lose. You win less Elo if you win against opponents worse than you, the worse they are the less you gain. Essentially the fastest way to gain Elo is to win against people who are equally skilled.
